Silhouette Siblings

John P. of Bluffton, SC sent the above scan to me (top photo~ click to enlarge). He explained it was of him and his siblings back in the 1950's, done at what he thought was Olan Mills. He said the original piece was mounted on 7" x 4 1/2" paper, and wondered if I could redo it and make three copies to give as holiday gifts.

I recommended doing them in a more "framing friendly" size such as 8" x 10," and he agreed. I also wanted to put in Sister's missing eyelash, and her missing braid that had been drawn in!!

Turns out when I called John for more information , he turned over the artwork, and the artist's signature was on the back! The original piece was done in 1944 or 1945 by Edith Lewis. Very nice work, I think!

Silhouettes Across the USA.

Some people ask me where I've traveled to to cut Silhouettes. I thought that was a great question, so I thought I'd look over a map of the USA and make a list! If I go to any new states, I'll add as I go along. So far the count is 37 states, plus Washington D.C. Here is the list, in alphabetical order:

California (my home state)
District of Columbia
Florida (but I live here)
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina
South Carolina
South Dakota
West Virginia

If you'd like to have a Silhouette Artist that knows how to get around an airport, rent a car, book a hotel room, AND get to your event on time...then don't hesitate to contact me at:
Go have a look on my Special Events page for more information. For inquiries, send an email with the date, location, and time of your event. Keep in mind I will be traveling to you from Orlando, Florida!

Silhouette Pendants

I have some brand new Custom Silhouette Pendants up on my Etsy store now!
The above one is...well, a little expensive since it is entirely hand made by a jewler friend of mine, but considering the materials and all of the work invested, I think it is something that is well worth it and will last forever!
The setting is made of sterling silver, with each leaf hand stamped, and each scroll hand formed. The bezel is made of Mother of Pearl, and a sterling silver silhouette is then hand sawed, hand filed, hand polished, then mounted onto the Mother of Pearl. Whew! And did I mention the jewler puts his stamped signature on the back of the setting? This thing is for REAL!

And now for something completely new in the Silhouette Pendant world!

Hand Cut Miniature Silhouette by Silhouette Artist Kathryn Flocken

Below are the Silhouette Pendants that I am making myself, cut entirely by hand. I'm pretty sure I am the only Silhouette Artist making pendants this way (most -if not all- of the others are traced in Photoshop, filled in with black, shrunk down, then printed out).

So I thought to myself, "Why not make them the REAL way? Hand cut them...that IS what you do!" So I set out to see just how small I could cut the little guys. I got them down to about an inch and a half in size, and showed them to a friend. She said, "That's pretty good...but when you show me one the size of your thumbnail...THEN I'll be impressed." So...a few days later I showed my friend the cutting above.

I just love a challenge.

Thanks Julie!

So here's an affordable hand cut Silhouette Pendant mounted in an antiqued brass oval setting. This one is just $40, and it comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Just email me a right profile photo of your child, and I'll take it from there. It comes with a leather 18" cord, gift box, and the Certificate of Authenticity.

Custom Silhouette Pendant in silver with a domed bubble. $40
Includes cord, gift box and Certificate of Authenticity.

This Silhouette Pendant is a glass locket that opens and closes. I mount the silhouette onto a piece of vellum, so the silhouette can be easily removed. A piece of lace or colored paper can be placed into the locket, and the silhouette put on top. Voila! Close the latch and there you have an ever changing piece of jewelry that will match whatever you are wearing. $40.
Comes with cord, gift box and Certificate of Authenticity.

This silhouette pendant is much like the one above, except it is placed inside the glass and left there to float. Includes box, cord and Certificate of Authenticity. $30

Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation Event

This was a SUPER FUN event! I've worked several times now with the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation. They throw parties for kids with spina bifida and other critical illnesses. This daytime family get-together and feast took place at Gator's Dockside Restaurant on the west side of Orlando.
These kids are GREAT! What spirits they have!
(I don't mean to play favorites, but Ashton pictured above was!)

Each child that had their Silhouette done that day received a copy to keep. A second copy was added to a collage, and later presented to the Foundation as a gift. Each child got to choose their favorite color marker and write their name under their own Silhouette!

This is Bella showing off her pretty bow...and Silhouette!
Alexis poses for his portrait.

Arora's Mom helps her sign her name on the collage.

A big THANKS to the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation!

Large Silhouettes...Plus More!

11x14 Custom Hand-Cut Silhouettes of Elizabeth and Virginia by Silhouette Artist Kathryn Flocken

Susan J. of Fayetville, GA wanted to know if I could do an order for her with multiple pieces, all in different sizes. Of course I was more than happy to oblige! We were having a rather large "rain event" here in Florida, so I was more than happy to do a big chunk of work while stuck in the house anyway.

Basically, Susan wanted her daughters to be showcased as the largest pieces, then have three girls doing several activities as the medium sized pieces, and two little birds as the tiniest pieces.

I suggested we do her daughters as 11x14's. The girls as 8x10's, and the birds as 5x7. She seemed to like the idea, so we went forward with the order.

8x10 hand-cut Silhouettes of a swinging girl, a reading girl, and a ballerina.

The little hand-cut birds were oh-so sweet, and were 5x7 inches each in size.
For your custom made order of hand-cut silhouettes, please go to and send an inquiry!
